Introduction
At this stage The Spit Restoration Project is just a dream I (Mal Ellson) have. This web page is the start of something I hope will come to fruition in the near future.
I appeal to all people interested in protecting our marine environment, locally on Kangaroo Island and also globally, to see how they can contribute to this project. If it happens, it will become a fairly big project, requiring time, money and resources from a variety of people and organisations.
The Dream
- Moor a houseboat at the Spit for worker accommodation
- Small power boat for use as a tender
- Self propelled pontoon/barge with trash pump aboard
- Volunteer workers erect pens on the spit to accept sand/shell from the pump
- Hardwood/softwood stakes hung with natural fibre cloth to contain the sand/shell
- Sea water drains away, rain washes the salt out
- Volunteers plant coastal vegetation
- Government departments work together to facilitate the restoration
- Partial funding by community - great place to visit when complete
- Partial funding by volunteer workers - young environmentally aware visitors to Kangaroo Island looking for a fantastic experience would pay to help
The Reality
- Expressions of Interest to be sought
- Environmental Impact Assessment to be made
- Committed partners to be brought together
- Research best approach
- Development plan to be drafted
- Business plan to be developed
- Implementation
- Assessment

You can help us restore 'The Spit' to it's former glory, providing the right environment for it's original inhabitants - penguins, shags, gulls, pelicans etc to rebuild their rookeries.
